I don't know how crazy this question might sound. But I'm really curious because northwestern's on my app list. How good is the engineering here? Please I need your responses.

^awesome. published rankings don’t do justice. “engineering first” makes it one of the most design oriented, integrated, and innovative engineering curriculum out there. it’s how engineering should be taught right from the beginning. it’s well-understood that the few-decade-old undergrad engineering curriculum needs to be changed yet few schools have done anything about it because most schools don’t put enough dedication and resources for the undergrads. Olin is another school with innovative curriculum; both schools share similar concept. unlike many CC posters, i actually worked as an engineer for few years; i may be a bit biased but i know what i am talking about.

My D is in the college of science, but she’s very close to several students in the Engg school. Her freshman roommate had exposure to industry in her first term, working on a project involving a medical device that was actually being prepared to be deployed in the market within a year. She’s also a close friend of a senior, who for the past two summers worked for a major Silicon Valley outfit, making the equivalent of $55K annual rate, and got a job offer with them upon graduation.

What I’m saying is that McCormick seems very hooked in with industry, which in my opinion is worth a lot more than magazine rankings, whatever they are.

coool…thank u all for ur advice. I appreciate it

don’t get me wrong. we do have highly ranked departments. material sciences & engineering / industrial engineering & management sciences are among the elite programs (top-5). almost all others are ranked in the top-20. electrical and computer engineering received the lowest ranking but it’s still ranked somewhere between 20th and 30th. many faculty are among the leaders in their fields.
