Engineering at Union College

Can anyone provide information on Engineering at Union College? How many students graduate per year? How many faculty? Placement record for grads? Areas of specialization? Comparision with other LAC engineering programs?

Thanks!

Bump - anyone?

The Union Engineering page [Engineering Home](http://www.union.edu/academic_depts/engineering/index.php) would answer a lot of your questions. It’s not going to compare other LAC engineering programs–that would depend on exactly what comparisons you’re seeking. Also it’s probably not appropriate to be comparing engineering programs at places like Union, Bucknell, and Swarthmore with colleges/universities that graduate a much larger number of engineers (am thinking of RIP, Lehigh, some of the Ivies here). Of course those places will have more graduates, faculty, and greater numbers of engineering specialties! That’s not to say that the small engineering programs in a liberal arts setting aren’t valid programs and the right setting for particular students.

I checked the website but it seemed pretty vague and marketing oriented. It didn’t provide answers about number of students, etc. It looks like Union offers EE/Mech E/Biomedical and Comp Eng - No Chem E and maybe Civil?

Of the LACs I’m familar with, Bucknell and Lafayette have reasonable size engineering programs with >100 students/class. Swathmore’s program is tiny with 15-25 students/class and they offer only general engineering. Where does Union fit on this spectrum?

From the website: “Approximately 80% of Union Engineering graduates go directly into the workforce after graduation.” Does this mean 80% of engineering grads get FT engineering positions after graduating? That seems really high.

Union only offers 3 engineering programs- EE,Mech E, and Comp Eng. I am not sure if the Biomed is accredited yet. They no longer offer Civil. Union had been my D’s number one choice for a while, but decided not to attend, since she felt limited by the choices for engineering, and knew that she was not interested in majoring in any of the other programs that Union offered.

I have hired a few engineering grads from Union, and they are all bright and energetic employees. All were Mechanical Engineering majors. One of the women who works for me said that the Engineering majors were definitely in the minority at Union. I believe that there were less than 50 in her class.

Pretty much every engineer from Union gets a job offer before graduation, unless they are just lazy, average offer is 60-80k, roughly 100 engineers, ME, EE, CE

Union is ranked 13th in the country for engineering programs where no PHD is available
