Hi! I had the great fortune of being admitted to UT Austin for Engineering! I am very fond of the school and I would like to know about the experiences some of you have had. I know most (if not all) the positives of studying in UT and Austin. Now, I want the downsides. I would really like to know what might be some challenges or negatives of going to UT to study (big classes, competitive atmosphere, etc.)
I know it might be hard to find negative aspects for UT in engineering, but anything that could help me get a clearer picture would definitely help! Thank you all for your help!
I’ll give you one…but easy to overcome if you are aware. My son just graduated in ME. There are SO many students and hyper-competitive super smart students, that you have to push to be “seen”. You can’t be complacent and expect to fall into great opportunities. This is for job fairs, internships, etc. My son is reserved and shy so this was something very hard for him.
DS is a double major: Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Lots of positives but, since you asked for negatives, I’ll say that graduating in four years with just the engineering degree is very unlikely. Don’t be surprised if you need an extra semester. Also, it’s extremely difficult to get a 4.0. If you need the GPA for a graduate program, this might not be the place for you.
DS has no regrets. Good luck with your decision!
To graduate in four years, back in the dark ages, I took a few classes through ACC during summer breaks.
If you’re going into an engineering graduate program, you don’t need a 4.0. If you want to go to medical school, you probably shouldn’t be an engineering major in the first place.
