I’m applying to college this year as an engineering major, because I want to become a biomedical engineer. However, my science/math grades have always been a bit weaker than english/humanities (Bs in AP Chem, Physics C), and I feel like it takes me a lot more effort to understand and do well in STEM fields. Thus, I want to go to a university where I can switch out easily if I decide to pursue something else.
I’m still afraid though, if I do badly and decide to switch out won’t it ruin my GPA entirely? Am I better off just not even trying engineering?
If you really love to do engineering go for it! The point of college is to learn. If your still having trouble with grades just keep studying or get a tutor. You also can change majors any time.
The key to choosing a field is not necessarily something that comes easily to you, but something that you really love and can eventually get if you put enough time into it. I’m not a statistics genius; I have to put some effort into it. But I love thinking about data and I can easily spend several hours mastering the concepts without realizing how much time has gone by, so fields that require data analysis are a good fit for me.
All sciences aren’t the same - your grades in chemistry may be more or less irrelevant to an engineering major depending on what kind of engineering you select. (I guess it would be important for biomedical engineering.) A B is a perfectly respectable grade that demonstrates good command of the subject. If you do like engineering (and math and physics) enough to spend several hours working out problem sets and studying for it, then by all means, go for it. It doesn’t have to be your best subject, just something you like.
