Has anyone had experience at Miami majoring in engineering (son is undecided) with the idea of applying to medical school? We have heard great things about Miami’s rate of acceptance into medical school, but it seems as if most of the students major in Zoology.
@jandhmom I can’t tell you anything specifically about Miami, but there are quite a few engineers who have gone on to medical school, including my brother-in-law (from Kansas). The key will be to make sure that your son takes the right classes for Med School admission. I’m sure that Miami has this information available. Bio-Engineering should minimize the number of non-major classes required for the GMAT and medical school. My son is attempting a dual major in mechanical and bio engineering.
Now, one consideration is that Engineering is a tough major, with fewer easy classes to fatten the GPA. However, I’ve been told that Med Schools like engineers because they have proven themselves to be organized hard-working, team players.
Thanks @Beaudreau. My hubby is also an engineer/Dr., which is where DS got the idea. I know what you mean about having a harder time padding the GPA. DH graduated 2nd in his civil eng. class at OSU with something like a 3.4. His physics score and quantitative scores on the MCAT were pretty high though, and he got in to OSU Med school. Nowadays I doubt that a 3.4, even in engineering would be enough to get in, but who knows.
