Engineering Major

Hey guys,

I am applying to a lot of the UC’s (LA, SB, SD, UCI, UCD, etc…) for computer science. So for 1st choice major i put down computer science. But for 2nd choice I am conflicted whether to put a major down in the same engineering school or a different school. Because if I don’t get into Computer Science, I would want to major in computer engineering. But some people have told me it’s better to put a 2nd choice major that’s in the liberal arts field or just far away from engineering , maybe like business or economics because at a lot of these UC’s engineering is an IMPACTED major.

So my predicament is that if I put down computer engineering as my second choice major it would make NOT HELP me at all because since engineering is impacted there is probably the same low chance of getting into one engineering major than it is to another. So if I were to get rejected from computer science then I probably will get rejected from the computer engineering because they’re practically the same in terms of difficulty of getting in. SO MY QUESTION IS do I put down computer engineering as my second choice major because THAT’S REALLY WHAT I WOULD WANT TO STUDY, and because it shows that i am actually committed to studying engineering, OR do I put a second choice major thats not impacted like business, political science, accounting, etc… and maybe go to said school and try to transfer into engineering.

AND if you suggest I do the latter, is there a major that is preferred to be in before transferring into engineering. I really don’t want to go through the second route of transferring into an engineering major because it’s super difficult and cumbersome, but if it’s just that or getting plainly rejected from engineering, I’ll take it.

Check each campus to see if second choice major is considered at all. Note that some UCs may offer CS in more than one division (e.g. engineering versus letters and science).

Also, if you get admitted in another major or as undeclared, you may have to face another admission process to switch into the CS major, if it is impacted. For example:
