I'm just checking to see how many schools are requiring their engineering students take two years(4 semesters) of a foreign language?

My girlfriend went to an open house at SMU and they are now requiring two years of a foreign language along with three semesters of English. She said there may be more requirements that have changed, but the foreign language requirement is such a turnoff that she will be attending a local state university that values a true Engineering curriculum.

Jeepers, at OSU the College of Engineering has no foreign language requirement (everybody else at OSU does). Who has time for that when you’re studying something like engineering?

That doesn’t seem outrageous. 3 semesters of English could be a year of Freshman English plus one semester of Technical Writing. The foreign language may depend upon whether you took a few years in HS or not. No HS language means 2 years minimum in college.

Most schools have it as part of their Gen Ed. If you took a foreign language in high school, you shouldn’t have to take it in College (this depends on school policies).
