I am currently enrolled at Colorado School of Mines in Mechanical Engineering. I have struggled here and I am sophomore in jeopardy of not passing physics 1. I really only decided on CSM because it was by far the best college I got into. Now that I am in my first major specific class ( Intro to mechanical Engineering), I am reconsidering my choice of college and major. I am very interest in Environmental science because I would be able to work outside. I grew up in the Rocky Mountains hiking, fishing, hunting, all that good stuff and I love it all. I also feel like with the growing issue of environmental problems this major will help in the future. The only problem is the environmental science program I am looking at is not nationally ranked. The environmental science program does not include O chem or some of those higher level classes but I was planning on minoring in biology and taking o chem classes and other science classes for electives. Also I was wondering how useful this degree would be after a career in the Army? I know engineering is hard to find jobs without hands on experience. I was wondering what ES thoughts were on all of this ? I am at a major crossroads and I am looking for any advice. thank you
I was considering environmental engineering myself but i do not enjoy engineering classes. I much more enjoy being outdoors and researching wildlife. I’m a sophomore majoring in environmental science with a focus in biology and i love it. I’ve always been passionate about the environmeny but knew that engineering wasn’t right for me. For my major, i do have to take chemistry, physics, biology, etc but i like it because it gives me a wide look on many different topics and how all of these topics fit in with the environment.
For your army question, i have no idea since i am still a college student and not considering joining the army at all.
I think career wise engineers tend to get paid better but i personally would not enjoy the work most likely.
