Hi everyone, I know it is extremely competitive to get into engineering college in CMU or UMichi, however, getting into college of science for physics major seems to be easier. Does anyone know the possibility to change school from physics major to engineering after enrolling? Thanks a lot!

We asked the admissions staff at CMU if you could start out as a Mech Eng. and switch to ECE or CS if your grades were good and the answer was “It is not impossible”. I think they are trying to prevent people from using the science school as a backdoor into the engineering, ECE or CS schools. Or even the engineering school as a backdoor into the ECE or CS schools.
My son was just unsure about CS versus two engineering disciplines
We were underwhelmed with the response.

Typically, if the school has different levels of selectivity by major, changing to the more selective major after enrollment requires applying to do so and going through another competitive admissions process.

Usually there are “safe-guards” against people applying as a certain major to gain a backdoor entrance into another more selective major. Of course, it is possible, but you should apply as the major your want to study.
