Can the Engineering Physics program be combined with computer science? Anyone in this program have any input?

“Combined”? Of course one can take courses from both the physics and computer science departments. Double-majoring is probably doable if Compsci 1 and Physics 1 are taken in the first semester. A major in one and minor in the other could also work, although it might not be much easier to minor in physics than double-major since the physics minor (and I think the engineering physics minor too) is as large as some majors (7+ courses).

Tangent: I think chemistry, pre-med, and pre-engineering students are the only ones here who can really be said to be in programs. Otherwise, there’s not nearly as much “program feel” as there would be in an engineering college simply because any two graduates in the same major (even in small departments like physics and computer science) have usually pursued fairly unique curricula. To me, that’s a good thing.

Thanks for the reply. My Son wanted to major in Comp Sci but is seriously considering the Engineering Physics program with the Electrical Eng concentration. Originally his thought was the 3/2 with Columbia, but not sure how difficult it would be to complete. Also, the money aspect when/if you get to Columbia…

If Fordham’s FA transferred, I’d be in the 3-2 program myself…

I don’t know if I’d major in CS here simply because the local labor pool might be a bit full given that NYU and Columbia both have great CS departments. Ask faculty where alumni have gone, although I feel like there’d be a lot of variation since there are relatively few majors each year.

On the physics side, about half of the experimentalists here have worked in industry or national labs and have degrees in engineering or in applied physics. They could talk to you and your son about a plan of study since, coming from an unaccredited (by ABET) institution, his individual courses, skills, and projects would probably matter as much as the name on his degree.

Looking at Fordham’s engineering program…any overall impressions ?..good program? bad program? decent success rate making it through ? etc.

Great info thanks again for taking time to respond!
