Is there any reliable or meaningful ranking of engineering programs, specifically electrical or mechanical? Any comments on the relative merits of SUNY Binghamton, Rutgers New Brunswick or NJIT? Thanks.
I am new to this myself but I did find that US News and World Report has Engineering Program rankings.
U.S. News best engineering program rankings are based on grad school ranking not undergrad rankings.
The things you need to know is are the programs ABET accredited. Are you in-state for NY or NJ
Have you compared the course offerings at each school along with the prerequisites?
Has your child visited any of these schools?
We’ve got all those issues covered. I’m hoping that practicing engineers can comment on how those three schools are viewed in the profession, for EE or Mech E. Thanks.
any engineers out there?
My information is a little dated given I moved out west almost 20 years ago. I took some graduate courses at Binghamton shortly after they opened their engineering school in the late 1980s. Before that, they had engineering technology degrees. It’s industry standing will suffer a bit since it is fairly young, though, of the three, it will have the overall highest academic reputation.
My brother-in-law graduated from Rutgers in Chem E, BS and MS. It was perfect for him, gave him the full college experience while having the academics and research available of a large state college.
NJIT would be lowest ranked but has had a few cheerleaders on here for their results-driven education. Tech schools have their pluses and minuses; 3 males for each female, low emphasis on non-tech stuff, few choices if you decide to switch majors, but fewer distractions from the real reason for being there.
Kids tend to do best where they are happiest. Any of the three would be a good choice.
This is helpful. Thank you! Anybody else?
The schools may have a specialty to make it better in Mech E or EE, even if the schools are all equally ranked. Near me there are 3 good engineering schools and any would be fine, but if you want petroleum or mining, you go to Mines. If you want aerospace, it’s CU. More industrial or manufacturing? CSU. All are ABET, and you can study any major at any of the schools. There are also five or six other state schools that offer engineering.
Thanks. It’s looking like electrical, not mechanical, if that makes a difference.
I am an engineer working with many engineers from different schools and I have yet to meet/work with an engineer from Binghamton. I have worked with many good engineers from Rutgers and NJIT. Perhaps that is due to my location in NJ, but I do work with engineers from other SUNY schools such as Buffalo and Stony Brook. As a matter of fact my hubby is a UB grad!
Out of curiosity, is there a reason why SUNY Buffalo and Stonybrook aren’t on the list? Both have respectable programs that have been established longer than Bing and the latter has a highly respectable CS department as well.
Back when I was a senior in HS in the mid-'90s, aspiring engineering/CS majors who applied to SUNY university centers gravitated towards Stonybrook and Buffalo. Bing…not so much.
