Engineering - Rutgers vs UMass Amherst

I have regularly admitted to Engineering at Rutgers(outstate) and UMass Amherst(instate) without any financial support fro both of them. I need to pay full cost. I probably go to Chemical or Electrical Engineering eventually. I am going to try premed program. I heard that Rutger has better reputation than UMass Amherst. Rutgers is ranked 64th US NEWS and UMass Amherst around 100th at school overall. In Engineering overall, Rutgers is very little bit ahead to UMass Amherst. I pay EXTRA 15K for Rutgers. I am not considering money seriously.

Is it worth it or not? Any comments are welcome!

Know little of Rutgers, but re: UMass amherst, how do you feel about major/all weekend drinking and a culture dominated by sports?

My DD is looking at engineering school; we are 40 minutes from umass-amherest and its not even on the list. At least the science library is now open more then 40 hours a week; that was not the case 3 years ago.

Thanks, toadstool.

It seems like people fill the same to all state universities. UMass Amherst has very good reputation in Engineering at least in East ranked around 35-40 in the nation in both under grad and post grad in the field and the same to Rutgers. My question is I have to pay extra 15K a year to Rutgers for his national better ranking. Is it worth with the extra or not. Any comments are welcome.

My son’s girlfriend is a civil engineering student at UMass Amherst and I’ve known others who’ve gone through the school as well. It is a well-regarded, rigorous program and the engineering students are hard-working and serious. They have to be, or they don’t make it though! There are certainly many UMass students who are mainly interested in drinking and sports, but they are not engineering students. As a big state university Rutgers is going to have the same problem with sports obsessed and partying students as UMass and its engineering school is probably not as good. Therefore, you should save the $15K a year and go to UMass. Besides, Massachusetts is much nicer than New Jersey! And I say that as a graduate of a Rutgers graduate school.

Lotta Rutgers haters… Pretty atypical from instate Jerseyians. I don’t know why we hate our own state school so much…

Yea, I wouldn’t listen to IHateRutgers <----- FYI look for a more unbiased name.

Rutgers Engineering is great will a lot you a great education. I know lots of people from Rutgers. BUT I wouldn’t definitely not pay 15k more for it. UMASS Amherst is an equal caliber school and it will be close to home. The main reason I chose not to attend Rutgers myself is mainly due to the lack of diversity - not racially - but in terms of location, almost every person who attends Rutgers is instate and for those who are not are from around.

I am pretty sure the same can be said for UMASS, but I think I would rather be with a group of people who know where I am coming from, then be in a place where everyone assumes you are from around.

Anyways, I overall agree that you should go to UMASS. Its a great school and will give you the same experience as Rutgers for less the price.
