Hey Guys, I'm an incoming Undeclared Engineering Major and I wonder if this schedule would be doable for the first semester?

Math 1B
Physics 7A
E10
-Humanities Course-

Also, I've been questioning these choices:

1) I feel like I need to strength my background a little more in Calculus, so I opted not to take Math 53 Immediately. Good idea?

2) Is Physics 7A for a freshman really difficult?

3) Is E10 Worth it? I just read the update on it not being required except for MechE majors (Even though I am considering MechE). Should I opt to take E7 first?

If you got 5 on AP Calc BC, just go for Math 53. You will be glad you made that decision.
If you still must take Math 1B, try to get Professor Stenkova because she is awesome!

Physics 7A for a freshman in the fall is not that difficult. There definitely will be nerds who just dominate an impossible exam every time, but it is doable as long as you constantly solve practice problems.

Which engineering majors are the ones that you are most likely to choose? You may want to take the courses needed for those majors.

I’m taking planning on taking 1B and 7A too (even though I got a 5 on Calculus BC; I kinda forgot some of my calculus).

So I was wondering, for 7A, which prof is better? Ramesh or Stahler? On NinjaCourses.com, the ratings for them are roughly the same. I’m planning on going with Ramesh since his lecture session isn’t so early. What do you guys think?

To anybody who got a 5 on the BC exam: I HIGHLY recommend starting in 53, even if you have forgotten a lot of calculus. 53 and 54 hardly use anything from 1B, and if you take a class later on that actually uses complex integration techniques or series or something, then you can easily review an old textbook as necessary.

53 is an absolutely perfect class for a first semester freshman to take (certainly was for me). Most professors teach the material pretty well, and it’s one of the easiest classes I’ve taken at Berkeley.

I don’t know anything about Ramesh, but I took 7B with Stahler. He was totally awesome! His lectures were extremely clear and useful, and his exams were a bit on the easy side, but they were fair.

How is it that 53 doesn’t use anything from 1B? Isn’t 53 multivariable calculus? So that has to at least use some sorts of integration techniques right?

Besides, I looked at the final exams for 1B, and I couldn’t figure out how to do any of the problems on them. And other classes that require 1B as a prereq will probably need us to use stuff from 1B, right? (like some of the more advanced physics stuff and engineering stuff) Plus, I’m not the kind of guy who easily picks up stuff from reviewing.

Most of the calculus you need for 53 is from Math 1A, not 1B. The only techniques used are pretty much substitution, integration by parts, and trigonometric integrals. That’s it. You would pick those up very quickly by doing homework problems if you don’t remember them right now…

As for later engineering classes, whenever I’ve had to use power series or taylor series or something, my professors have always reviewed the material sufficiently. It is a non-issue in my opinion.

I’m planning to go into MechE or BioE.

I’ve been looking at the math courses for a while and I initially was thinking just go straight into 53. Though my BC score isn’t back yet, I think I did very well. It’s just that I decided on 1B to make me feel more comfortable because some of the math I learned in BC I didn’t catch very well. But, I still have a week or two to think it over haha.

@Ginyu: Maybe I’ll see you in class haha.

If you haven’t known it before, go to Schedulebuilder.berkeley.edu and check out the grades for all classes you are planning to take. All I can say is the grades don’t look that great for Math 1B. For some people it’s their first time taking it but there are also several people who take it as a review but still don’t do well. I’m not saying you are one of them, but there is no guarantee whatsoever that you will do well just because you already seen the material before.
