Hello, I'm interested in chemical engineering (or maybe materials or mechanical) and I've applied to 13 schools. All of which have at least chemical and mechanical. I was just curious how they rank against each other. Basically are they all good engineering schools with good programs?

In addition, if I were to switch to chemistry or a science major, would I still be fine in that school?

Any information would be wonderful! Even if it's for only one school!

Thank you!

Drexel University
Lafayette College
Lehigh University
UMass Amherst

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)

As far as I’m aware, there’s no national ranking for specific departments at the undergraduate level. There are the whole college ones you’ll already be aware of then the research rankings. The problem with the research rankings is that while they are helpful for grad school decisions, they don’t tell you anything about the quality of the teaching which will be your major focus over the 4 years.

The idea of ranking universities and departments is already highly contentious so I’m going to put that aside. I think you’d be better off focusing on what the best department would be for you.

1) Delete any if you’d be seriously unhappy with the location, size, student body etc of a college. Engineering is hard enough to stay focused on. You don’t want to be wishing for the next vacation at the start of every semester.

2)Think about what is cool about those engineering disciplines? Are there fun activities some colleges offer to get good experience e.g. taking part in robotics competitions, practical community projects etc. Investigate each of these colleges for these ‘extras’ that give you more beyond the classroom.

3) Do any of the programs have links to industry for industrial internships? This is really important for future employment.

Thinking about issues such as these should help you rank them yourself by the most important criteria- your own needs for the next 4 years.

These schools are all fine for what you want to do.

Which schools are you sure that your stats would get you accepted…and…that you know FOR SURE that you have all costs covered?

You have some OOS schools…do you have all costs covered at those schools? For instance, PSU won’t give you much/any aid. Will your parents pay the $40k+ cost?
