Engineering Schools - UDel versus Tulan

Hello, my son got accepted into all the schools he applied to but right now he is down to 2; UDel versus Tulane. Tulane actually gave him so much in merit that it is the least expensive of all the schools, and $6000 less than UDel with their package. He also got into Tulane Honors. But we live in PA currently (maybe moving to Georgia within a few years). That being said UDel is closer. What are experiences and is living that far away (NOLA) a big stressor for students. Honestly we’ve been researching and every site has different statistics. UDel engineering is higher ranked but the school overall is not. He doesn’t know for certain where he’ll end up after graduation from college but wants options. UDel has more engineering programs. But Tulane, well what can you say the name says it all and the location is amazing, but is it safe? #1 party school but is that because it is #1 party city? If you aren’t a big partier although you like to socialize its it really a problem? I am looking for real experiences from both schools to help him choose. Thank you.

Bump…

Tulane.

Does your son know what type of engineering he’s interested in? If I recall, Delaware has a high ranking in engineering, bit especially in chem e. They have good relationships with Delaware chemical companies. If your son is interested in a different discipline though, I would say Tulane over UDel, especially with it being more economical. The Tulane students I know are serious students and I dont think of it as a big party school. Congrats to your son, he’s got some great options! Maybe also post this question in the Tulane and UDel forums to see if you can get some current student or recent grad input.

It sounds like Tulane is the much better choice by a long mile, given that it’s a much more highly ranked school on a national level, he’s been given a merit scholarship and is in the honors program. Does he need to keep a minimum GPA to keep the merit aid?

NOLA is a 3-hour flight from Philadelphia, so the distance should not be a huge concern (unless your S wants to remain local). If you do end up moving to GA, Tulane will be much closer than Del, so it’s a wash.

Has he visited both schools? What are his impressions? I think that Tulane would provide a much richer experience overall.

(And, yes, this thread will get more traction on school-specific forums.)
