I found a couple of national engineering societies I was interested in joining, but wondered whether it was worth it? One of them offered mentoring for engineering students which I'm interested in -- but outside of that, are they worth joining?

87 views and nothing. Bump.

They are worth joining if you get involved and do stuff with them. If you just join and get a line on a resume, then it isn’t worth that much and isn’t that impressive.

join the Society for your field of study. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, you get the idea.

You should also keep an eye out for scholarships. I wound up winning one for $3000 from a local chapter a few years back. It wasn’t even that hard to win since I was the only person that applied!

Yeah Im heavily involved in my Schools NSBE chapter (Pres. last year) and Ive gotten 2 scholarships from applying the last two years. I think a lot of people just dont apply to a lot of org. scholarships.

Also if you are involved with your org. it looks good and a resume and gives you something good to talk about at job interviews as they always ask about leadership experiences ;).

Tau Beta Pi is worth joining; employers recognize it as an honor to belong. There are other benefits too: insurance, scholarships…
