Hi, I just received an invite from TBP. I was wondering, is this a "reputable" honor society? I've heard of alot of honor societies being scams, and I've recieved invites in the mail from tons of them. Also, what are the membership dues? And what do you do exactly in an honor society? Any major benefits besides just putting it on your resume (and hoping the person reading your resume will know what it is)?

Thanks

Tau Beta Pi is pretty reputable, and reasonably well known. It was created as a response to Phi Beta Kappa, which is limited to liberal arts majors (or some such) and has been around for a very long time. I would say it probably the most worthwhile honor society for an engineer, as it is a little more selective and a lot better known than most of the rest.

I think dues are something like $80, but I am not sure. As for what you do, it depends a lot on the chapter and on you - a lot of people just put it on their resume, but I know a number of people who have made good connections through it, and others who received fellowships.

I would say Tau Beta Pi is VERY reputable. My dad had the greek letters on his college class ring. I remember asking him about it when I was very little. When I got into engineering school, I decided I was going to get into the society so I could put the same letters on my class ring! And I did.

I got in as a junior (the requirements are more stringent for juniors than seniors), so I put that on my resume. Engineers looking at resumes will know what it means.

As an officer of TBP, I got to meet Robert Crippen, one of the space shuttle commanders. It was one of the highlights of my college career.

ah ok, thank you for the replies.
