I was just wondering what the students themselves think of the computer science program? Quality of program overall? Teachers? Classes? Classmates? How do you guys rate these aspects of the computer science program?

Ratings from other engineering majors are welcome as well! I decided to make this post because on CC it seems it has a great reputation but on other review sites I’ve seen some mixed reviews.

I can only speak of what my son has told me. He’s a third year CS major currently carrying a 3.5gpa. He had never written a line of code before CalPoly. He feels the profs and TAs are all very approachable. He’s carried A’s and B’s in all of his CS/CE classes.

The first major hurdle was CPE357. It’s an extremely difficult course setup, apparently, to weed out the serious CS students. I’ve heard rumors that the class has a 40% drop rate. The class slogan is “Study 125-135 hours per week.” All programs in this class are pass/fail. Meaning, if you don’t pass ALL programs, you fail the course.

Classmates- His best friends today are the same people he met his first year. Two of his three roommates are also CS majors. They are all very helpful to one another. One of his roommates had a lot of coding experience and was able to help my son out early on. The value that my son brought to the “team” was that he was able to optimize the programs more efficiently.

Learn by Doing is not just a slogan in the CS degree. CS and CE majors are highly sought after because they can hit the ground running. My son was approached at a Career Fair, just last week, about a potential Co-op position next year.
