iTransfer,

Keep in mind though that the pre-pharm prereqs will take 1 (with AP credit) to 2 years (if you stack them). My point is that if you are going into pharmacy, there is no need to spend an EXTRA 2 years on a B.S that you have no intent on using.

I don’t suggest doing engineering either but if he enjoys the subject then there shouldn’t be anything stopping him. I rather be happy studying something I enjoy for a longer period of time than be miserable studying something I hate for a shorter period of time. But if you plan to do engineering just because it is a good back-up than don’t do it.

Itranfer,

I agree.

To the OP, though it’s impossible at any age to really “know” what they want but you need to do some soul searching and contemplate what will make you happy. A degree doesn’t mean that you are locked in a single career or lifestyle–it’s just a pathway and skill set. I have no qualms with the pursuit of knowledge (I’m a graduate student) BUT at time you need to stay realistic. You’ll be kicking yourself if you stay 2 extra years and never use the skills or leaving 2 years early when you have no passion for pharmacy.

As far as your parents go, I think it’s traditional Asian-american ideals. I know mine wanted me to go to Medical school just because it’s stable and “respectable”, whatever that means. To be honest, 5 or so years from now, your parents won’t give a damn what you majored in and will just want you to be happy anyway.
