ChemE --> pharmacy?

I have been accepted to NC State's college of engineering and also UNC for chemistry. I would get an undergrad degree in chemical engineering if I go to NC State. Right now, I think pharmacy looks like a fun career, possibly obtaining a PhD and pursuing research or even just a PharmD and working in a hospital. I've heard that any major can get you into pharmacy school, and I figured that since I love calculus, physics, and chemistry, I should jump into engineering. Is this a death sentence?

I have read on here that it's easier to switch from chem-e to chemistry than vise-versa; would it be better for me to attend the school strong in engineering even though I'm not 100% sure engineering is what I want to do?

For sure man. That is the right idea. Don’t let underlying fears stop you. Obviously your a bright guy, and who does his reasearch ( that is why you have an account on this discussion board). So go for it man, plus with ChemE you’ll have a lot more opportunities opened.

Thanks. And I’m a gal. =]

I’ve been accepted into the Scholar’s program at NC State which allows me to take honors classes. I’m really not sure if I can handle the course load though…I’ve never had a problem in high school, but I’ve never been in any truly challenging class. I guess I won’t know until I’ve tried, but I’ve just heard many people complain about the difficulty of engineering.

Also, would it hurt my chances of getting into pharm school if I am a chemE major, since I’ll likely have a lower GPA than if I were a Chemistry major?

Thanks for the response.

ive actually wondered about this too. is the process exactly the same as pre-med who just so happens to major in ChemE?

UNC Pharmacy requires only two year pre-pharmacy. If you take this route, you could finish your PharmD in 6 years.

ChemE is hard. Why do you want to put yourself through 4 challenging years, then add 4 more to get a PharmD?

Hillbillie,
It’s very hard to get into UNC Pharmacy after only two years. Some people do it after two, more do it after three, but nowadays most people obtain their undergraduate degree before they’re accepted to Pharmacy school.

So you think majoring in Chemistry is the better route for my situation?
