Engineering to medicine?

Let me start with a short introduction to my situation. I went to a state school and earned my degree in civil engineering, but my GPA was a 2.55. To keep it short, I was lazy, unmotivated, I didn't study, and I really liked to drink. I got sucked into the bad crowd and didn't care. I actually hated engineering and really wanted to eventually go into healthcare. I really don't know why I didn't change my major.

I ended up landing a few decent engineering jobs, passed my professional engineering exam, and ended up back in school to earn a graduate degree. I went to a state school and graduated with a 4.0 with a masters in chemistry while holding onto my engineering job. I got my masters because it allowed me to move up within my job. I've worked a few years since then, but I could never get the idea of becoming a physician out of my head.

I've shadowed a few doctors and it seems like something I would really enjoy.

I'm considering quitting my job, doing post bac coursework, taking the MCAT, and applying to medical school. My question is... Am I insane, or should I go through with this? Do I have a shot at a decent medical school? I'm also 29....
