England to America

Hi,
Im an 18 year old student for Birmingham England, i am starting a 2 year college course in September.
Despite the vast number of universities in England i have recently become more interested in moving to America to pursue further education after being made aware of poeple i know doing so.
I am studying film/media in the hope of being a media journalist or film director and my college course will award 3 1/2 A levels upon completion.

However i am completely unaware of how English qualifications transfer to the American counterparts or where to start looking in your vast number of Universities.
Due to this i have compiled a few questions:
1. How will my qualifications compare to those awarded by American education systems?
2. I will be the equivalent of an English university starter so at what point will i be joining the American system?
3. What kind of course should i be looking for?
4. When/How should i apply?

Any other information or personal experiences will be a massive help.

I posted this on the general forum and it can be viewed here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/911678-england-america.html

Thank you

How do you plan on funding college in the US? It’s very expensive. I honestly cant see it being worth it, especially if you want to study something like film/media.

Yeah but at the end of the day Uni in england is very expensive aswell.
The way i see it is that the majority of film is in hollywood, so to be studying in that area will allow me to do volountry work experience ect and make it easier for me to learn the trade and cget myself known in the business.

What are you talking about? Uni in England (or anywhere in Britain) is not expensive at all, and there at least you can get very generous loans and grants to pay for your education. You dont seem to have thought this through.

Go to a university in the UK and do a year abroad in the US. Much cheaper, plus it gives you your experience. The government in the UK give you loans to cover tuition and living expenses. You are unlikely to get this over in the US. Have you had a look at how much per year they charge just for tuition?

x

I suggest you finish Uni in UK first, the top film schools in the US are among the most expensive, especially since you will be an international. Prepare a good portfolio and work on film contacts in UK first. Then shoot for a job in Hollywood instead of going to film school in the US.
