CandidSquire-Yeah, there are 16 different colleges. Did you not research them before you applied? I mean it’s no big deal if you didn’t pick one, they just throw you into a main pool then. The college is just where you live, etc.

Agreed – it’s not like an Oxbridge college, where which one you attend has a big impact on your teaching/life. They are more like glorified dorms/halls of residence.

Got my offer to Edinburgh for law today. Still waiting on LSE, Durham and QMUL. LSE has given out rejections already for law. Durham has started rejections, but not for law.

congratulations! that’s great. maybe i’ll see you there next year. do you think durham or edinburgh is a better choice? Also, are you applying for grad school?

Thanks! I think it depends on the subject. They’re both so close as far as reputation and teaching quality that you can’t go wrong with either. Law is an undergrad degree there instead of a grad degree like in the US. However, imo they are both better options than amherst ;)

CandidSquire,

Congrats on your acceptance to St. Andrews and Edinburgh. If you don’t mind me asking, did you apply through the UCAS system or did you apply to each of the UK schools directly.

I ask because my son is considering applying to St. Andrews and Edinburgh, but I was thinking the UCAS system took a longer amount of time…offers not forthcoming until some time in Feb or so.

^^^^

Apply through UCAS. UCAS is super easy. You write a personal statement, fill in your name/address/qualifications, and type in the teachers name that’s going to do the reference. That’s it. Really no complications at all. Plus you can’t apply direct to Edinburgh anyway. You’re allowed to pickup to 5 choices on UCAS and it costs the same. So you can throw in 3 more choices. Not sure what course your son wants, but that would give him the choice to pick something like UCL, Durham, LSE, Warwick, etc.

UCAS does not take longer to receive an offer. Not only have I already received an offer on a joint honours, I know 4-5 americans on TSR (UK equivalent to CC) who have received offers that applied through UCAS. In fact, one kid got an offer within 2 weeks of submitting UCAS. Only one person applied directly to St. Andrews on TSR. She received an offer after someone who applied through UCAS.

Thanks very helpful.

just got an unconditional offer at durham!!! now a new choice presents itself. durham or edinburgh for history?

Congrats!

Received an offer from Durham for law today. Seems as if Durham released a few offers for Americans today. I know one other on another forum that got an offer.

Do you know which college you have been allotted? Or in track does it say “One of our colleges will contact you shortly to confirm details of your allocated college.”

As far as Edinbrugh vs. Durham. Your best bet is to visit and see which one fits you best. The difference between the two is so marginal that you can’t go wrong with either. One thing to consider though is that Edinburgh is 4 years vs Durham at 3 years. Maybe that year alone would save you needed cash. If you aren’t tight financially, then definitely visit and find out which one fits.
