English at U of R

I have applied to Rochester and I really like the school. But I know it is a very science and research oriented school and I am definitely going into somewhere relating to English or the liberal arts. Rochester is known for science but is the English program equally strong and is it worth my consideration if I know for sure I'm not going into science?

krwatermelon,

I think you might find this thread very helpful… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-rochester/1117061-rochester-english-department.html?highlight=english+humanities</a>

The thread contains a lot of insightful responses.

My d majored in English at UR. She loved the program and has gotten a job for which her English degree prepared her. The only science course she took was required for her other major in social sciences; she did her cluster in math.

You can get an excellent education at UR even if you’re not into the sciences.

D minored in English (math major). She thought she had excellent courses and professors.

To add to my comments in the linked thread, UR is a very good size for humanities majors like English. A large school needs to cover many students for writing classes and perhaps distribution requirements. This stretches resources and can create competition for slots, even if writing classes are run separately. A small school can’t offer as much as a university. A smaller university like UR has the resources but not the issues of scale.

The English department at UR is great. I’m a lit major and have been beyond impressed with classes and professors. There’s a nice variety of courses, too. When I transferred here, I was a bit apprehensive since UR’s science and research aspects are so well known, but the humanities here are fantastic on the whole. There’s also theater and humanities-related clubs/ societies you might be interested in.

Lilac13: My daughter has applied to UR and is a theatre geek (tech side). What theatre clubs do you participate in?

momzhood: I’m actually not in theater… from what I know, there’s different types, anything from casual to professional-looking performance groups. Maybe someone else has more specific info?

There’s also a list here of performing and fine arts groups:

My daughter graduated from Rochester in 2010 and was an English Major, concentration in theatre with a double major in music. Todd Theatre is outstanding and there are many opportunities on the tech side for performances throughout the year, generally 3-4 plays along with one-act play festival. There is also the student-run TOOP (the opposite of people) still going strong. D was one of the founders of this group in 2009.

Yay, TOOP shows are awesome!
