Hello All,

I'm currently a junior (well, only for one more day!), and am in the process of finding colleges. My passions lie in writing and English, so that's what I intend to major in. My school seems to have a special relationship with U of M, because almost every senior who applies there gets in. So, since I will be applying and have a good shot at admission, I'm wondering, how is the English department at U of M? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I'm interested in this, as well, for my daughter, although we're OOS.

Not too sure about the department's quality, but I know several students majoring in Honors English, and they are definitely your brilliant, "scholarly" type. My roommate had straight A's in all English courses, and he still got rejected from the Honors concentration program the first time he applied. Luckily he got in after he tried once more. In the regular English courses, you will most likely find the student body to be half good and half mediocre, but that goes for all majors.

How do you apply twice to the Honors concentration program? I thought you could only apply during your Junior Year.

I think English is ranked 9-13 somewhere nationally. People I know who take English classes really enjoy them.

This probably isn't very helpful, but...the one english class I've taken (English 125) was the best course I've taken at UM. And I don't even like English. I think it mostly had to do with my awesome teacher.

Thank you very much for the responses, so far. U of M might be well worth looking into, in spite of the sky-high OOS tuition. :)
