English Class Confusion

The bio dept says that first years should take English 101/102 the first year. The general email about advising told my son to take 105. So which should he try to take, and what is the difference?

Ok, I’m seeing that rules have changed and new students must take Eng 105. Must students take another English after that?

ENGL 105 is required of all UNC students entering in the fall. Students used to be able to place out of ENGL 101 + 102 with a good score on the AP Lit exam, and then they were done with English if they didn’t want to take anymore English classes. Now, even though you can still get credit with the AP Lit exam, no matter what score you get you have to take ENGL 105 or 105i. There are no exemptions. Your son should take 105 or 105i either the fall semester or the spring semester of his freshman year. 105i are English classes with a focus in a particular area, such as law, the natural sciences, the social sciences, humanities, business or medicine.

That is the only required English class, and he does not have to continue with English.
