Does anyone know how to satisfy the language requirement for an English major without taking any language courses? I’ve heard that you can petition or use an AP exam score, this is true?
Reading is your friend!
From the Chicago course catalog, describing the requirements for an English major:
[quote]
Language Requirement
Two quarters of study at the second-year level in a language other than English i*. Alternatively, and with the permission of the director of undergraduate studies, two courses in an advanced computer language. Students successfully petitioning for credit toward one or both language courses due to an existing level of proficiency must supplement this with an equivalent number of English elective courses./quote
AP scores alone won’t get you second-year language credit. You will probably have to take a placement test (that will likely consist of final exam questions from a second-year, second-quarter course), unless your qualification is obvious (e.g., you are a native speaker of a language other than English, and have previously produced sophisticated written work in that language). You can also take the computer-language route.
