**English Majors: Help Please?

which one is it?

"....and where associations among the constant variables is explained"

or

"....and where associations among the constant variables are explained"

please explain why, much thanks..

The second one.

What is being explained? "The associations." That is your subject, so you obviously use "are" since the subject is plural.

I concur. Good call, jpps1.

jpps1 explained it quite well indeed

OK now I found a cumbersome one that I bet you'll struggle with. Can you help me? (AND NO I AM NOT BORED, THIS IS FOR A PAPER THANK YOU..)

which is the correct one:

"In a country such as Brazil, where the construction of racial identities are as important as the social interaction within “race relations” itself,

or

"In a country such as Brazil, where the constructions of racial identities are as important as the social interaction within “race relations” itself,

or

"In a country such as Brazil, where the construction of racial identities is as important as the social interaction within “race relations” itself,

third one. in any of these sentences, when determining verb tense, you should rule out prepositional clauses like "of racial identities" or "among the constant variables," and only look at the subject. here it is 'construction.' the construction (sing.) IS as important as the social interaction...yada yada

ok well then the book this this sentence was in by the author is wrong then, right

Either 2 or 3 is right. It depends on "how many" constructions you have.

Third one.

Think about it--do you say "the constructions of houses" or "the construction of houses"?
