**English Majors Please....

I came across this on my course syllabus for my law class and thought it was composed incorrectly. What do you think?

It said the following:

"If you experiece difficulty in this course for any reason, please do not hesitate to consult with the professor. A wide range of services is available to support students in their efforts to meet course requirements."

now, should "is" be changed to "are", I thought?

which is right and why?

here's my two cents....

in the sentence you provided the verb clearly is the word "is," as you have already identified. The noun it is in agreement with is the word "range." The word "wide" is an adjective employed to modify the noun, as does the "wide range". I was always told that range was a collective noun....so I am going to have to say that the professors usage appears to be correct.

" 'A' wide range of services. "

Seems to me like the subject is singular (and thus, the professor is correct).
