English/Theater Major

I'm considering applying to USC, but I had a few questions. I want to double major in English and theater, but, although I am interested in the acting side of theater rather than the technical side, I don't think I could realistically make it to California (I live in Washington) for an audition. I know the BA program does not require an audition, but I've also heard that it can be better not to get a BA at a school that also offers a BFA. So, essentially, what can anyone tell me about USC's BA program for theater, their English program, and how a double major might work? Also, I'm looking for a school with strong financial aid. How is USC in that respect?

First, USC School of Dramatic Arts (formerly School of Theatre) says it is not possible to get a BFA in Theatre and also double major in something else. So if you are certain you want that, or if you’d like to keep your options open, the BFA route is likely not for you.

That said, it is very doable to double major BA Theatre and BA English. At USC, the auditions for all regular productions are open to BAs and BFAs, and there are separate BFA-only shows each semester. For the musical, I believe anyone at USC may audition. This is different from some other universities, and many take advantage of the BA’s flexibility. For example, a number of professional working actors at USC prefer the BA route as they have time to audition and work in Hollywood. The BFA’s path does not permit this.

Best of luck.
