I am interested in applying to USC as a transfer student. I want to take the BA for Theatre, not the BFA. However, auditions are only open to those applying for the BFA. In solely applying for the BA, I am afraid that my grades alone are not good enough to get into such a prestigious school, so my question is if I should apply for the BFA with BA listed as my second major choice? Say I did do that and then managed to get it, could I switch to the BA degree? Or would I be stuck being a BFA? Also If i did just apply BA, would it be taken into consideration that I dont get an audition, thus making it any easier to get in? I don't know how they accept for the BA program so I am a little confused and would appreciate any help :) thanks.

Ok… your post is kind of really confusing (maybe cause I just woke up), but I’ll do my best. I did not apply to the BFA program at all (I’d love to be a BFA sooooooo much, but I’d love even more to study other things, like film and musical theatre, and the BA program allows me to do that). I didn’t audition, so that was not at all factored into their decision to accept me. I did have a phone interview, in which I expressed my enthusiasm for theatre and acting in general, and I think that probably helped me.

I don’t think anyone can really tell you an easier way to get in to USC, honestly. It’s a competitive school, and all anyone can really do (aside from turning in a really kick-butt application) is cross his or her fingers and hope. Best of luck to you!

You may be able to get around a less than stellar GPA by applying for the BFA program but BFA programs in general are very, very competitive and I’m guessing you would not improve your chances of admission unless you are extremely talented and even then it’s not a sure thing.

Maybe your best bet would be to apply for the BA but find some backup schools that are a better fit for your GPA.
