<p>I am interested in journalism and becoming a writer. What schools are the top writing programs in the country? I am interested to find out about the prestigious writing programs and am interested especially in newspaper writing and nonfiction.</p>

<p>University of Iowa, fo' shizzle. This isn't my area of expertise by any means, but a few others (non-Ivy) I have heard described as top-notch are Hopkins, Rice, BU, UMich, and Berkeley. Hopefully someone with more expertise will chime in - Journalism programs I know, but not so much English.</p>

<p>You should definately check out the University of Pittsburgh, it has a top-notch writing program.</p>
<p>It's important to distinguish between journalism programs and creative writing programs. They're totally different, and schools that are good in one may not necessarily teach the other. Most journalists would say that it's a mistake to study journalism as an undergraduate--it's a pretty useless undergraduate major. Just work on the college newspaper, and then (if you want, though it's certainly not necessary) go to graduate school in journalism.</p>
<p>I don't really want to do creative writing. But i like nonfiction and journalism type. Also what is creative nonfiction?</p>
