So, about this time last year, I inherited the business of my grandparents - I do not want to reveal much information of the industry or size, but I will say that it has 16 full time employees and over 80 clients. Since I thought I was responsible and my parents are busy with their own jobs, I decided to become CEO of the company. I work roughly 30 hours a week, the work is tedious and stressful (I've been sleep deprived) becuase I always want to better my company's services and not lose clients. Now that I am going to be a senior in high school, I debate if holding this job will inhibit me in the future from being employed. My friends tell me that they would be intimidated to hire a person with the position of CEO as a 17 year old. I am also not sure if that is the reason none of the internships I applied to called me back.

On the other hand, could this make up for my lack thereof extra curricular activities? I honestly think school clubs are just college application “padders”, so even if I had the time, I would not be in any.

College Confidential, where being a 17 year old CEO holds one back…

^ CollegeConfidentialproblems, as crazy as it sounds.

I got that position because of my family, rather then perseverance.

I’m serious. Will doing volunteer work at my local library and vet make me appear more humble and capable of doing any task, because thats what I am doing?

You just said clubs at schools are no more than “padders” for applications - and now you want to do volunteer work for the sole purpose of making yourself look humble.

more humble? OP, if you do volunteering and clubs just for the sake of ECs they won’t seem genuine at all. on the other hand, you really seem to be interested in this business. admissions-wise, sticking with your business is your best bet. as for future job prospects, I don’t know whether it will help or hurt. as far as I know though, you don’t have to mention that qualification if you don’t want to.

You already have a job - CEO of a company! Most people who have tons of ECs and go to college for years can only hope to be in the position you’re in right now. Why don’t you stick with it?

Like I said before, I fear that my job will intimidate future employers (I don’t mean that in a condescending way). A businessman I worked with before told me he would never hire a person that went to a better university then him or a person with a better resume because he fears that they will eventually “outdo him”. Most business people I work with are taken aback by my age (despite the face that I look older than my age) when they meet me. I would honestly not go to college if my parents would not kill me. Although I would like a strong academic background…

If you don’t want to put the position on a r

^ True.
