business

Hello,
If I started a business in 8th grade, and continued it throughout high school, would it be impressive for colleges? (It's cutting grass and right now I cut 3 lawns)

A neighbor of ours did that. He started with lawns and it turned into a full landscaping/snow removal business. He is doing so well that he decided not to go to college right now and instead focus on his business. He is doing fairly well.

If you grow it into a good business that shows commitment it will look as good as any other EC that you might have done during that time.

Um…maybe. This lawn mowing business sounds comparable to babysitting business. I think it all depends on what you are doing. Do you have a business plan, marketing information? Are you a LLC?

Hoping you file taxes on the income you are earning!

I’m not saying that mowing lawns is a bad thing…on the contrary, it is terrific. But the devil is in the details.

it really all depends what you do with that biz. If you become a pro gardener(and still want college) it might be helpful. If you just have more yards to mow it looks like a nice part-time job. We just don’t have enough info here to really make much of a determination.

Will you pay for the lawnmower, sharpening, maintenance, and gas? Or (as I did as a kid) is Dad paying for that? That and the tax thing separates a summer odd job from a business.

I don’t know that it is impressive; however, you can certainly list it as one of your EC activities. It helps to create a picture of who you are. It certainly shows initiative, a willingness to work and a long term commitment. My son did something similar and had “Neighborhood Landscaping Services” under Work Experience on his resume. He did not talk about starting a business, just that it was one of his spring- fall jobs.

Sorry, 3 lawns is not really a business. If you get more clients this summer then maybe it can count as something.

Agreed, three lawns isn’t really a business. It is a good thing to do and it is fine to include as a part-time job.
