Enough? Too high? Too low? You call!

The writing section didn’t really matter last year (Thank goodness!). But I heard that it will start counting this year.

^ where’d you hear that?

the reason i ask is because my friend went on a cornell tour a few months ago, and the tour guide said Cornell doesn’t look at the writing section, so is the tour guide misinformed? ><

Well, I heard when I was applying last year (for a spot in the class of 2012) that that year was the last one in which the admissions officers won’t be putting much weight into the writing section.

Now that it has been 3 or 4 years since the writing section was instituted, I think they might change that policy. Not really sure. You should ask an admissions officer if you get the chance to go to a meeting.

Oh, and I withdraw my post about the Ag school and CAS. I found this link which explained it better. [Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office - RESOURCES](http://admissions.cornell.edu/resources/faq_answer.cfm?num=23)

^ ahh, okay! thanks

i just emailed the admissions office a few days ago, looks like i’ll be going back :)

I really want to go to Agriculture and Life Science because… ^^ I love biology and love AEM (XDXD). I am the finance minister/treasurer for our school mandarin club and is managing $1600 worth of club fund. And I am undertaking a research project - Extended Essay (required by I.B.) related to plant biology (about wheat growth). I will briefly describe it on my application in the “additional information” section.

I wanna take solely biology in first year, and in second year I’ll double major in biology and AEM (if I can handle the course load.)

I plan to apply to A&LS because it’s a contact school, which may implies that it has lower acceptance rate for internationals than A&S. Is it recommended that I apply to A&S instead?

definitely enough, I think you should also try to apply to some more selective schools. only use ED if cornell is number one on your list. good luck !

I think CALS will better serve you Neineibu…A&S is more traditional liberal arts while CALS is a bit more applied with a foundation in the liberal arts…

^ResurgamBell Thanks so much for your comment.

Yah I have officially decided that I’ll apply to CALS. I know that there are just tons of well-known profs at A&S, but I can take classes at A&S right?

–I got into CALS for biological sciences last admissions cycle (so I’m Cornell '12) and I think your stats are similar to mine. you’re certainly not way below me, and you’ve probably got better extracurriculars than I did. you have a reasonable chance, but it’s obviously tough for anyone.
–it is really reasonable to apply to CALS if there is a particular interest in AEM.
–from what the materials said, the biology major is basically the same in A&S or CALS…if the OP has not read bio.cornell.edu, he or she really should! there is a lot of good info there.
–you can (and will) take classes in A&S, some specific number is allowed.

and last but not least

–why not put MUN on your activity sheet? it’s a nice thing to do!

good luck!

faustarp: Oh I have read the website. I was just wondering whether I should put better faculty before my interest. But now I understand I can take classes at A&S. By the way, what is your SAT Reasoning and Subject Test Scores? I worry a lot about my SAT Reasoning score… My dad told me my TOEFL score will have bonus effect, but I am not sure how much weight Cornell puts on TOEFL.

I wasn’t thinking of putting MUN on my application because I just started that EC this year. However, will Cornell consider the fact that I just transferred to a new environment this year?

^ If u have room put MUN cuz it’s pretty big at Cornell. But def only if u have room since u only did a year. MCMUN is fun, u crazy canadians :)

Also… Should I put down Taiwanese, or Canadian, or both as my citizenship(s)? I don’t really need financial aid.

U could say both if u don’t need aid. Being of multiple-citizenship probably means that ur either well-traveled or have a diverse family background/experience. I know I would be impressed if I saw both since they are such different places and it means u have probably traveled to/lived in both and pull urself from both cultures. Diversity and being able to bring something unique (and desireable) to the table is a key in college admissions. If u had no other ideas for a college essay u could even draw from ur experience of being an immigrant from Taiwan to Canada…u could go so many different directions with that.

Alright thanks a million ^^!!

I like your chances. Great grades and solid SAT. ECs look good as well. If there was a room for an improvement, I would attempt to boost the CR score just a bit, although your current SAT composite score is very solid anyway. Besides the stats, please make sure that you write compelling essays on how Cornell’s academic opportunities and culture will suit your interests and goals. Let me stress that essays are very important for admissions at Cornell. With good recommendations and good essays, I would say that you stand a very strong chance as of now for ED. Definitely apply ED, if Cornell is your first choice, to boost your chances. RD is much tougher. Good luck!

patlees88: Thank you so much for commenting on my chances. And yes, I will 100% apply ED, since Cornell is my number one choice.

NICE NICE NICE :D

I don’t get why you took AP if you’re already doing IB though, also in subjects that you study at IB.

Nice stats and LOVE THE EC’s - how did you convert your GPA from IB and also, LUCKY your schools lets you choose higher and standards… my school says NO MORE THAN 3 HL :frowning: ahh well, I’d say drop geo to standard.

Do you have any idea as to what your predicted IB grades are?

ilovebabypink: I follow UC system in terms of GPA calculation. There are certain HL courses, not all, that you can count as /5.0. For unweighted, I just base my GPA on how many As and Bs.

Yah I am definitely dropping geography to SL.

I am estimating that my predicted will be 38~42. Here is my estimate breakdown

English HL - 5~6
Math HL - 6
Chemistry - 6~7
Biology - 6
Mandarin - 7
Geography 6~7

TOK 2/3?

My school is very strict. If I get anything below 38 I am not sending my predicted grades. I am just hoping for a 6/7 in English HL.

And also, I just took AP for fun…-.-… I feel awesome if I rape a College Board test… XD

Slightly off-topic, but… some people here seem to have the impression that the faculty in CALS is not as good as the faculty in A&S. (This was mentioned several times and reiterated in post #30.)

I’d just like to point out that CALS is one of the best colleges of agriculture in the entire world, and the professors there are as qualified as they come. Whether or not you want to study agriculture is a different issue.

kdmom: I do wish to study agriculture. Thank you for your information.

By the way, how hard is it for internationals to be accepted by A&LS? I read the student profile page on the A&LS website, and there is a Taiwanese girl ^^ (nice to see a person from Taiwan too). I am thinking it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
