Entering high school... tips??

hi, i'm entering high school next year. in my four years of high school i'd like to accomplish much and hopefully graduate to an ivy league university. i have always loved learning and science (esp. genetics and molecular biology) ; i want a career as a research scientist or college professor. i have a few questions...

Even though I'm taking AP Bio, AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus Junior and Senior year (my private school doesn't allow sophomores and freshmen to take AP classes), I'm also naturally talented at art.. won a few competitions here and there. I have no intention of going to art school for personal reasons, but would AP Art be too stressful?

My high school doesn't have a science club. i was thinking of making one, maybe like Science Olympiads? what are some prerequisites? i think it would be so much fun.. haha i'm so nerdy ;)

I would also like to intern for a college laboratory freshman year. Although I have connections as my father went to Harvard Med, i'd still like to know what college professors are looking for in a high school student intern, esp. a freshman. What are the chances of a freshman actually getting an internship anyways??

if I take AP Art, i would have to quit instrumental ensemble as an elective. my mom wants me to write something like "took 10 years of flute" on my college app. i'd say i'm average at flute, but i've been playing for a long long time. I'm better at Art, honestly. if i was to pick art over instrumental ensemble, i'd have to pay $300 a month for a private tutor to write the flute thing on my college app and continue my playing.

What are some fun community service experiences you've had??

Thanks in advance!! Sayonara!! :)

You’re still in middle school? The best advice that I can give you is to enjoy yourself while you still can. Trust me, worrying about college admissions is nothing that I’d recommend rushing into. I think you’ll be just fine, just enjoy your freshman and sophomore year. All you can really do is get involved in activities that you can see yourself doing all 4 years, and most importantly, do well!

If you are good at art and like it, you may want to stay with that. I don’t want to sound harsh, but colleges aren’t usually actively looking for flute players. Flute’s like violin, there are just too many.

You’re not even a freshman yet, but here are something things to think about. Don’t overload yourself with ECs and academics. One of my biggest regrets of high school (even though I’m thrilled to be accepted to my top choice ivy level school) is that I sacrificed a lot to maintain great ECs. A good deal of my high school career was getting home at 10:30 and working until early morning on homework. The only time I could hang out with friends was on the weekend.

$300 a month for lessons is ridiculous. You do not need to be spending that, especially if you aren’t even in any ensembles/competitions. Honestly, you can put that you’ve been playing for 10 years regardless of whether or not you’ve taken lessons that long. The flute thing probably won’t have a huge impact on your admissions anyways.

Yes

Ask your high school. Note that starting a club looks great on a college application.

I don’t know, but would think all the spots are taken by college students.

You didn’t ask a question, but I have no answer based on your information.

All of them. Note colleges like seeing ones you do year after year, especially if they are ones that you can continue as a representative of the college to which you go.

Things to remember for your high school career aimed at colleges: Grades and SAT/ACT scores are the most important; leave time for fun.

One fun community service activity to consider is volunteering abroad during your summer break. There are lots of programs available for high school students. Not only will you be able to demonstrate your compassion, but you’ll be demonstrate international awareness as well. Furthermore, you might actually have a good time and meet lots of people!
