Female US- has a very strong resume in terms of test scores all types, GPA- top of the class at a highly competitive private school, very rigorous course work including several courses in Economics, and very high level math (Beyond Calculus BC]. Strong music background, several instruments, section leader in orchestra, president of a large club on campus (politics/ debate category) and several other student leadership positions, A couple of varsity letters in sports and played other JV level sports all 4 years. Strong writer with published creative work and high achievement in cutting edge science research at a prestigious university. Community service activities are mostly related to volunteering at the local hospital and teaching kids locally. Also volunteered for get out to vote campaign but does t count that as volunteer work since it was affiliated with a political party.
However, she has t started a company or a club of her own. Is this a big negative for Wharton? What kind of business/ entrepreneurship experience is Wharton looking for undergraduate admissions? She does have some very innovative ideas about what she wants to do which may eventually lead to a business proposal…but those are only ideas at the moment.
Thoughts?
“volunteered for get out to vote campaign but does t count that as volunteer work since it was affiliated with a political party.”
Counts for colleges.
Lots and lots of posts this season from kids who founded something and feel.it could be a hook or tip. It’an EC.
What has she accomplished with this? Tippy tops tend to be more focused on the 4 years there. Less on future hopes. Wharton does want to see leadership, but that can be shown in many ways.
@lookingforward …that work was with a local senators campaign team to get other voters to the poll to vote for candidates (Ds] who will support gun control measures in response to school shootings, She has been told that it doesn’t count as community service…so it is absent from her application. Not sure where this could or should be added in the application. Thoughts?
She has shown leadership mostly through her student leadership work (MUN president), student prefect, peer educator, orchestra section leader. She is also in the masthead of a literally magazine at her school,
If you mean doesn’t count for school credit, she could still list it as volunteer. No harm and it’s an active effort, not easy for many kids.
My son is a current freshman in the M&T program in Wharton. He had zero experience with business/entrepreneurship in high school.
@“UMD2021&2023” thank you so much for sharing that! I read about your sons credentials in another thread and they are truly impressive indeed. I feel like DD has a few elements in common including the academic courses, research and being a classical pianist for more than 10 years plus playing other instruments. If I may ask, what part of the resume did your son emphasize to show “leadership” qualities? Also where does one show community service hours?
Hi Sush2016! Yes, it does sound like our children have many things in common! As for the leadership, he tried to emphasize it in his essays. The community service hours he put as one of his “activites” on the common application. Penn also allows applicants to submit a resume at the end of the writing section on the common app. So anything he could not highlight on the common app he made sure to highlight on his resume. Good luck to your daughter! What an exciting time she has ahead of her!!
