I’m going to be honest. I flunked Geometry during my Freshman year. I struggled through Algebra 1 and 2. Im going into Senior year and taking AP Enviormental Science and Marine Science. I’d like to know if their is any of chance of me being able to major in enviormental engenering.
Im scared of anything that has to do with math. I dont understand anything and what i do remeber i pretty quickly forget. I constantly came after school to ask for help from teachers.
Have you not taken precalc? Most engineering programs expect you to start with calc 1 in your first semester. If you have to take college precalc instead, you’ll have to play catch-up later, maybe over the summer after your freshman year.
Then there’s the math itself. Most engineering majors take up through Calc 3 or Differential Equations. If you start with precalc, that’s 4-5 semesters of math, which will require a LOT of work if you have a shaky math background. How did you do on your SAT math section? Why did you struggle in geometry and algebra?
No, im in AMDM for senior year. Advanced Mathemtical Descion making. Its the schools way of saying your terrible at math. My SAT math score was a 430. And as for my struggle. Seeing mathetical equations make my head spin. Slopes…and stuff like that. Im not ever sure how i came out of algerbra 1 and 2 with a C+ and B- average.
If you don’t overcome that, I do not think you will be able to complete an engineering degree.
However, it’s up to you whether you want to put the time and effort into building up your math skills, or just major in something that doesn’t require it.
Math is a very big part of an engineering degree program. If concepts of very simple things like slope make your head spin, then your chances of success in enginerring are very poor.
“My SAT math score was a 430” - That sounds awfully low for engineering applicant, especially when there is a general dislike of math. Math is a REALLY BIG part of engineering. How are your Verbal scores and class grades? Maybe we will have other ideas for you.
A big part of what my son loves about environmental engineering is rooted in his love for math. It’s hard to understand why you would choose this direction considering how you feel about math.
Sorry to say but maybe try environmental science. It’s a science major that involves more memorization. Environmental engineering like most engineering is built upon mathematical concepts.
