I was looking up ABET certified programs on the ABET website and it seems like there are only a handful of accredited programs in Environmental Engineering, far fewer than in the other engineering programs . . . Does anyone know why that is?

Probably because there are very few standalone environmental engineering programs. Most are a part of the civil engineering or chemical engineering departments.

I agree with ken…if you are interested in env eng, look at the stand alone programs in addition to civil & chem e programs that have an environmental section. For instance, at Carnegie Mellon, its the Civil & Environmental Engineering department. Definite differences between a civil & chem e environmental eng approach, though.
