Environmental Science

I know that Ithaca is well known for the Park School program, but I was wondering if anyone knows how the Environmental Science program is? I know it's a "green" school, but academically and opportunity-wise (i.e. research, internernships), is it just as good?

There seems to be a ton of internship and study abroad opportunities for Park students, but are there the same opportunities available to students in the sciences?

Any info would be appreciated.

I went to visit Ithaca and had the opportunity to sit in on an academic sampler called “Solving BIG problems-a Multidisciplinary Approach to the Environmental Crisis.” From what I’ve observed that day, most current students have an interest in preserving the environment. They are involved with environmental research and activism, both on and off campus. Ithaca actually owns a portion of land behind the school where the students and faculty uses to plant.

The Environmental Studies Department offers up to three $5,000 scholarships each year to incoming students in an Environmental Studies or Science major. The Student Projects program provides funding support to Ithaca students to pursue research or demonstration projects.

As for internships, there are on campus and off campus positions. Ithaca has preference to internships with established community partners, including EcoVillage at Ithaca, New Roots Charter School, Tompkins County Solid Waste, Sustainable Tompkins, Cayuga Nature Center, Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute, and others.

Thanks for the info, JustaDream. So, have you sent in your deposit? What were your other choices if I may ask?

No problem. I sent in my deposit a couple of days ago! My other choices were Syracuse, Allegheny, St. Johns, and a couple of city and state schools.
