Error Identification Question

On problem 28 of test 1 in the Ultiamte Guide to SAT Grammar worksheet, I believe there is an error. The sentence reads as follows

Convinced of (A) the artistic purity of their work, many novelists have long dismissed (B) the Internet as a means © of distributing their writing and often sought (D) to avoid technology entirely. No Error (E).

Isn’t “often sought” on error, as it should be “have often sought.” The book says no error.

It’s a good way to say it. For example, I am playing video game and talking with my friends. You don’t say “am” two times.

Actually, technically the OP is correct in terms of preferred choice for formal writing, Elegant writing would include the second “have” because it keeps the present perfect tense consistent, instead of implying a shift from the present perfect to the simple past.

There are lots of test prep books. Not all of them correctly mirror the standards of the CB. The book in question was not published by CB.

Reply #1’s example is slightly different, because in the case of the present progressive, there is no confusion with another tense. (We don’t assume that the writer means “was playing” the second time, unless explicitly stated.) Also, the proximity of the two verbs is an issue in writing. Reply #1 illustrates main verbs that are very close to each other in the sentence, whereas the OP’s example show main verbs much farther apart, which favors repetition of the auxiliary verb.

Thanks for the correction I missed that part.

Guess I just have to stick to the blue book.

Yes.
