Ervin Program

Looking for more info on the Ervin Scholars Program. How many do they usually give out? What are they looking for in candidates (grades, test scores, ec's etc.)? Also, if you get it I heard they inform you before you are informed of your admission?

All info is appreciated.

look on their WashU's website.

i'm a current ervin freshmen and there are about 50 of us, 51 i think to be exact. we are the largest class on record and the trend has been that it grows every year. what they look for in candidates is more than academic merit because test scores etc. have to be great to get into washu. they look for people who value diversity in some form according to the application materials etc. but really they look for unique interesting people. all of us are really different and many of us have done some amazing things. the interviews are really important as they want to have an idea of who you are. i feel like what you've done as well as your interview matter. however in order to get to that interview stage make sure your essay is solid. let your personality shine through while keeping an idea of what the program stands for in mind. and if you apply to be an ED you find out about the scholarship and admission in december if you are a regular decision candidate then you find out you've been accepted to the school in march, are flown down for a finalist weekend, and find out a couple of days after that.

that was really helpful. what kind of scholarship did you get from the ervin program?

Hm...finally something on the subject of the Ervin scholarship! I applied ED for both the scholarship and admission and I am wondering about how notification for both of those works...

What specifically do you think they look for in a candidate? Also how many people who are invited to the Finalist Weekend don't get the scholarship?

to answer msmith392 you find out about ervin when your letter for admission arrives. um, i don't know what they look for but my room mate is an ervin as well and we can't remember very many people from finalist weekend who didn't end up with the scholarship. i would say personality, a story, and passion are all found in all of us.

thanks amu521! one more question-- is the nov 15th notification an invitation to the finalists weekend next semester?

um yeah its an invitation to finalist weekend. it for most people is accompanied by a call but i ended up calling laura stephenson, the coordinator for confirmation before she called me b/c i was in shock.

amu did you have anything unique about your situation or something moving that got you the scholarship?

um well i put a lot of work into my essay. actually i spent more time on the ervin essay than on the washu essay, b/c without ervin i wouldn't be able to afford this place. my essay was about my work with underprivledged kids nad how here i wanted to get involved with nsbe programs that go into schools and tutor and mentor kids. um, i dont think i'm spectacular by any means of the word, in fact, i'm pretty avg. i think.

Is there a certain SAT/ACT score to qualify for Ervin scholars?

amu is awesome, but she is just too modest to say it, lol

But, one piece of advice I usually give h.s seniors is that something you genuinly love and really defines you will be percieved as unique if you write about it from the heart. With that being said, one doesn't have to find the cure for cancer to be an Ervin, most of us consider ourselves to be normal people, we are just really involved in what we love to do. The Ervin program is looking for people who are dedicated leaders commited to serivce and helping others, not people who are superficially trying to be unique. Just be you and the rest will take care of itself. There are no minimum scores or anything like that, but you do have to be among the top candidates, but there is so much that goes into the equation that its hard to clearly define what the "top candidates" will have. Sorry if this confused you more than when you first asked the question, lol

did anyone here about this scholarship?

i asked this somewhere else and haven't got a reply. the Ervin Program description said "US citizen who have challenged themselves and excelled academically, can...blahblah" does that mean i am disqualified as a permanent resident? i think this is the only scholarship that specified "US citizen" ><

Sakuragirl--

"Can international students apply for scholarships?

Yes. International students are welcome to apply for all the academic scholarships except the John B. Ervin Scholarship."

From the scholarship section of the FAQ.

thanks for the response:) but i am not an international student. i have lived in the US for the past 7 years and right now holds permanent residency. i'm just wondering if they view green card holders different from US citizens. i think what i'll end up doing is submitting the app anyways and hope they don't throw it outXD

sakuragirl,
Why don't you just call up the coordinator of Ervin program to get an answer?

umm b/c i'm writing an essay for a similar scholarship so i'll just apply to Ervin too and hope to get in:D
