Essay about research - are these things overdone?

Last summer I worked on a project for ISTS in computational lingustics - modeling the evolution of languages. I don't know if this is really contest-winning material, but it's certainly not something you see every day.

Searching for essay topics, I've naturally wondered if this could be grounds for a good one. I am the archetypal CCer in some respects (awesome SATs, tons of APs, dull ECs, no real "hook"). But then, I'd imagine Harvard & co. get hundreds or thousands about research projects each year (though most are probably on more conventional bio or physics topics). The thing is I'm not really a science major necessarily, and in the rest of my app have tried to pass myself off as more of a Renaissance man polymath type. So would a well-written essay on my project work, or merely make the overworked admissions officers yawn?

ba-da-ba-bump

it couldnt hurt...if you have no other hook just send it in and hope for the best...i mean they either wont care or bother to look at it or theyll be impressed with it...even though the first might seem more realistic...why not try
