Question: Can daily actions of average people have a significant impact on the course of history?

Answer:

The daily actions of average people do not demonstrate a significant impact on history. Only the more than average man with exceptional skills and abilities play a crucial role in history. The novel 1984 and the historical figure Andrew Carnegie clearly emphasize that only extraordinary men affect history.

In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the failing efforts of Winston Smith exemplify a situation in which average men do not affect history. Winston was like any other man living under the totalitarian government in Oceania. Constant moderation of media, history, and daily routines drove Winston to stage a revolt. Driven by his love for a co worker, Julia, he establishes a union with the leader of the rebels. However, his attempt to overthrow Ingsoc (English socialism) is deemed futile when his admirations of being a beacon of hope is crushed. The Inner Party had known of his attempts of tyranny, and effectively neutralized his frustrations with the system of Big Brother. Therefore, the inner parties ability to establish dominance over Winston, who was an average man, demonstrates that in order to impact history one must be exceptional.

Andrew Carnegie, the renowned founder of Carnegie Steel Company, was far from an average man. Having grown up as a poor immigrant from Scotland, Andrew wished to establish himself as more than average. Starting at a small scale factory, Carnegie was able to utilize the Bessemer Process in order to catalyze the steel industry. However, solely utilizing this process was not enough for him, Carnegie became the first industrialist outside of railroads to use vertical integration. A process in which a company owns all phases of manufacturing from raw materials to distribution. Even with the 1890 Sherman Anti-Trust Act attempting to break monopolies, he was able to form the first billion dollar company in the United States. Creating a fortune so immense, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) estimates he owned 2.5% of the national GDP. Thus, Andrew Carnegie's formation of the first billion dollar company and continual donations of his life fortune with the Carnegie Foundation emphasizes the need for more than average men.

After careful analysis of Andrew Carnegie and the novel 1984, one can see that average men show no significant influence on history. Only the great men augment their lives to a point at which they establish historical significance.
