Can we have shorter essays than the max? Usually people ask if we can go over the limit, but how much under it can we go?

it doesn't have to be 4900 characters. that is the absolute maximum. if you're below you should be fine

yeah, I also found it weird how Stanford has an extremely long limit for the long essay. I'm only at about 4200 characters.

I'm having a hard time shortening mine!

Mine is way below, but it's a page. and they said to keep it at one page
So...I think you don't have to have that much

Mine is above, but it fits on a page, so I submitted it anyway.

Remember that they count spaces as characters.

Mine is like 700words, 4300characters
is it better to cut it down to 500 words, or squeeze it in one page?
thanks~

I think you should just copy and paste your essay into the box rather than upload a new document. It should fit perfectly in there and you'll lose around 200 characters indenting it and all that stuff. It'll probably be very close to 4900 characters.

Ok, now I have a new problem. Now my essay is too long. It is 4200 characters not including spaces, 900 words and 5100 characters with spaces. Its a little under a page and half long.

I thought I was fine because it fit onto the PDF pages they gave us with the upload feature. (Actually I thought I was below with 4200 characters.)

So, I was never below, but am actually 200 characters over the limit! I can see an entire paragraph I could cut out. I added it just to make the stupid thing a little longer.

I already submitted my app so I guess its over. Ugh, thats that. Have fun at Stanford without me...
