I tend to write extremely long essays, so I was wondering in your opinion what is the longest a college admissions essay should be? I am also curious as to what the average length of a college admissions essay is? Thanks!

I think most of my essays were ~500 words. In general +/- 10% is my rule of thumb, so if they ask for 500 words I wouldn’t go over 550. Writing a shorter essay takes a lot more work, but it’ll be better in the end once you cut the unnecessary fluff. Plus, the reader is going to have a stack of hundreds of essays on their desk, they’re not gonna like seeing a 10 page essay in your folder.

I agree with Star*, but my essays were around 600 words and one of my friend’s essays was 800 words. If you’re at a point where you just possibly cannot cut down your essay anymore, then I think it’s fine as long as it’s an enjoyable essay. :)

Thanks a bunch guys! I was thinking around 1000 words so I’m glad that got cleared up!
