Essay prompt question...

For the supplement essay prompts, what does choice #5 mean?

"5. The essay submitted with my Common Application was written based on Richmond's prompt number___."

Does that mean that I can pick out an essay question on the common app and write the number of the common app essay on the space provided in choice #5?

I find it kind of confusing because because the directions on the top state:

"Submit an essay written on one of the four prompts below. YOU MUST IDENTIFY WHICH PROMPT YOU'VE CHOSEN BY CIRCLING IT ON THE SUMMPLEMENT FORM. If you used one of these essay prompts on your prompts on your original common application form, please circle option five on this form and let us know which prompt you were responding to."

If I chose one of the other four prompts that Richmond gives why would there be #5? I have an idea about what to write but i kind of strays from the given prompts. I was hoping that I could use the "topic of your choice" on the common app.

I think what it means is that if you write your Common App essay on a "topic of your choice" which is actually one of the Richmond essays, then you dont have to submit two copies of the same essay. Either way, Richmond wants you to write from one of their essays, but you may use that as your Common App "topic of choice." I hope that clears it up. Thats how i understood it, but you may want to contact the admissions counselor.

i called and talked to admissions
what it means is that they dont need your common application essay..they just want your richmond supplement essay BUT if your common app essay satisfies one of the supplement questions you can send that in
