Essay: Responding to the Prompt

How imperative is it that the content of my essay directly addresses the prompt?

For example, in the essay "Describe the world you come from, for example your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?", would it be okay if I wrote about an individual "experience" I had (ie. a world that I only lived in for a few months) and discussed how that experience shaped my dreams and aspirations? I don't "come from" this world, but I was in it for a short time...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think if you make it clear that you were in that world for a short time, it had an impact on you, and it's a good essay, then why not? I don't think there's anything wrong with interpreting the question loosely.

But if it's a recycle of another essay and not tailored to fit MIT's question, that's might be a stretch.
