So I have heard that the essay is a huge factor in the admission process...overall my application is average if not a little sub par for a school like Cornell.. I know this essay could make or break my admittance...so here's my idea..I have mentored this kid who was adopted from Ethiopia a few years back... His parents approached me and said he was struggling with school, respecting their authority, etc...he wanted to be back in Africa with his "true" family...I was the only guy who could connect with him...since he has become a part if my life...a friend not a child to tutor...he has made a 180 degree turn...
Yay or nay?

could work – just make sure that the essay is enough about you rather than him. Also, “show don’t tell” the impact of your involvement. . .

I’d also be sure to tell how your experience will make you Cornell material and say how you will you use the experience to succeed at Cornell.
