So I have heard that the essay is a huge factor in the admission process...overall my application is average if not a little sub par for a school like Cornell.. I know this essay could make or break my admittance...so here's my idea..I have mentored this kid who was adopted from Ethiopia a few years back... His parents approached me and said he was struggling with school, respecting their authority, etc...he wanted to be back in Africa with his "true" family...I was the only guy who could connect with him...since he has become a part if my life...a friend not a child to tutor...he has made a 180 degree turn...
Yay or nay?

I think that would be an awesome essay to write about, it shows your abilities and your personality. I am also in a dilemma about essays. My essay topics that I have been thinking about are: I get migraines a lot but I still do well in school so I don’t know if I should write about this, I volunteer at various events and it has helped me gain leadership, My grandma passed away 4 years ago and I’m still not over it… she died in an accident and she was my best friend, even though I know this topic is popular I know it would be a personal topic for me. Help me out?

Migraine, while showing diligence, also present a possible weakness…
Admissions don’t really want to hear a sob story, however personal…

I think for college essays you need to show some sort of adversity you overcame and how the experience will make you a better student at Cornell. Also show passion with what you want to do at Cornell and try to tie it to your experience somehow.
